Frequently Asked Questions
Questions Frequently asked about Marietta Medical Massage
What is medical massage?
Medical massage is a targeted form of therapeutic massage designed to treat specific medical conditions, such as chronic pain, injuries, or soft tissue issues, using techniques like deep tissue or myofascial release to improve mobility and reduce inflammation. Unlike relaxation-focused spa massages, it often involves a clinical approach with sustained pressure on muscles, tendons, and ligaments to break up scar tissue and promote healing. A high level of communication is generally necessary to ensure proper location of pressure and depth of pressure. At Marietta Medical Massage, we specialize in this evidence-based method to help with conditions like frozen shoulder, sciatica, tech neck, or TMJD in Marietta, GA.

What is referred pain?
Referred pain occurs when discomfort is felt in one area of the body but originates from a problem in another, such as shoulder pain stemming from a neck issue or back pain from myofascial trigger points. This happens because nerves from different regions can converge, sending misleading signals to the brain. Our therapeutic neuromuscular and trigger point massages in Marietta address these by targeting the source, often relieving symptoms like headaches or radiating leg pain.

How can poor posture cause muscle pain?
Poor posture, such as slouching over a desk, unevenly distributes weight on the spine and muscles, leading to strain, weakened tissues, and imbalances that cause chronic pain in areas like the neck, back, or shoulders. Over time, this can tense muscles repeatedly, increasing abdominal pressure and reducing pelvic floor support, exacerbating issues like lower back discomfort, and slowing digestion. We use neuromuscular therapy, myofascial release, and posture-focused massages to correct these imbalances and alleviate pain.

How can massage therapists work with physical therapists and chiropractors?
Massage therapists (LMT) collaborate with physical therapists (PT) and chiropractors (DC) through multidisciplinary approaches, such as shared client referrals, joint treatment plans, or co-hosted educational sessions on pain management. While chiropractors adjust joints and PTs focus on rehabilitation exercises, massage therapists complement this by addressing soft tissue tension and improving circulation, creating a holistic care team for better outcomes.

What if I'm not sure what type, length, or Frequency of massage to schedule?
Your therapist can adjust the session type, so don't worry if you're unsure about the type of massage you need. Your LMT will recommend the best fit, such as deep tissue for chronic issues or Swedish for general relaxation.
For length, a 60-minute session allows for a full-body overview without detailed focus or one targeted area like the neck. A 90-minute session covers a full body with one focus area or up to three specific areas. For more complex needs, opt for a 120-minute session to address a full body with multiple focus areas.
In terms of frequency, needs will vary depending on the situation. Sometimes shorter sessions spaced over a few days can be more effective than one long session. On the other hand, longer sessions spaced over a longer duration may be appropriate.
